Tell us: what excites you about your work right now?

Mariana, Toj + Tijax co-founder, and I have just come back from an ancestral homeland trip to GuateMaya, we are unpacking all the lessons from that trip which will likely include fire ceremonies and community conversations on experiences across diasporas. I have just been awarded a Death Doula training scholarship (through Going with Grace) and I very much look forward to offering this healing and transition practice to more community members.

What feels rich and abundant in your work right now?

Our teachers are the plants, each other, community, the land, the seasons, the fire, the water, the earth, the wind. We have teachers (elemental/animal/and human) guiding our offerings to community. The opportunities to hold altar space or fire ceremonies for communities have been finding us, we are grateful that people are finding us for collective healing.

Who do you dedicate your work to?

Our work through Toj + Tijax is dedicated to our Mothers, GrandMothers, GreatGrandMothers, and on. They are why we are doing this healing work for our communities. Thank you for reminding us of our power, medicine, and gifts. Maltyox ancestors. This work is dedicated to trans, queer, two spirit, black, indigenous, people of color, to QTBIPOC in the various diasporic experiences. We belong. We are home. We are guided by the ancestors. We are seeds and we are carry seeds of liberation and healing.

Who inspires you, who are you learning from, what books are you reading? We are really excited to learn this about you!

Learning from Alua Arthur Going with Grace; Resmaa Menakem's book My Grandmother's Hands: Racialized Trauma and the Pathway to Mending Our Hearts and Bodies; Tzutu Kan of Balam Ajpu, musician and cultural practitioner; Karen M. Rose and her book The Art & Practice of Spiritual Herbalism; Fire Heart: The life and Teachings of Maya Medicine Woman Miss Beatrice Torres Waight; Zenju Earthlyn Manuel's book Sanctuary: A Meditation on Home, Homelessness, and Belonging, and so many more!

How can people reading this support the work you are doing?

You can find out more about us on Instagram. Follow and share out our work to QTBIPOC community members.

If you are interested in collaborating to host a fire or healing space for your QTBIPOC community members, email us: ritualofmythmaking@gmail.com

What is your own wellness practice? How do you find balance?

My wellness practice includes being in relationship with the medicine of cacao, making time to be at my altar, making yummy and supportive tea blends for myself, my fam and my peeps, taking time in my yard to hang and care for the plantitas, going for walks when I can with friends, and practicing at home yoga.
