Co-Owner, The Collective STL

Fall 2022

Alonzo is a 200RYT, community leader, coach, husband, and father with the mission of empowering Black people by giving them tools necessary to show up unapologetically and confidently. He has nurtured several new black people into the yoga and educational spaces and continues to hold space for future leaders in the St Louis region.

We would love to hear your story. Please share your journey on what inspired you to do the work you are doing and anything you've learned along the way.

Being a yogi of 20 plus years, I have witnessed both the beauty and the strain within showing up on the mat as a person of color. I dealt with the presumptions and micro-aggressions of being in spaces that are stereotypically white, affluent, and hyper-mobile females while simultaneously reaping the physical benefits of the practice. So once my partners Terry Harris, Melinda Oliver, and I were finishing our Yoga Teacher Training, the conversation of effectively making yoga accessible and assessable took legs birthing The Collective STL. Our first class was on Martin Luther King Jr. Day in 2018. It was donation only and received very well. That paved the way for framework of all of our yoga classes moving forward.

I always honor those who practice taking out time for themselves and Terry consistently reminds our members to “take up space.” These things are my own reminders to actively consider my own well-being and to stop diminishing myself for others to be comfortable.

How has having a physical wellness space impacted your wellbeing and/or your community's wellbeing?

Having The Collective STL studio has showed me so much about myself, filled me up when I didn’t even know I needed it, and provided a uniquely beautiful introduction for many people of color into the mindfulness space.

How can people best support your work?

Though all of our classes are donation only, we strive to provide the quality experiences of community, space, and yoga for first time yogis as well as new people coming into our spaces. That experience is free mat rental; blocks, bolsters, and blankets readily available; and free water and refreshments after every class.

How can people access your space, attend classes or workshops, etc.?

We are locate at 1400 North Market St, St Louis, MO. Our class schedule and how to register can be found on the website (http://thecollectivestl.org). We have Neo Soul Yoga Sunday at 1:00pm; Power to the People Monday 6:30pm; Tuesday & Thursday Yoga for the People; Wednesday Hip Hop Yoga at 6:30pm and Yoga For the People Saturday at 9:30am.
